The log cabin quilt is made from a traditional pattern which has been in use for many hundreds of years. Typically each block has lighter fabrics on one side, and darker on another, all arranged around a central square. Traditionally, a cream or yellow square symbolised light in the window for welcoming visitors, and a red centre thought to symbolise the hearth of the home. Blocks can then be arranged to make a variation of different patterns - which look complicated but are actually fairly simple!
The log cabin design is ideal for beginners, or those with some sewing experience.
Come and spend three sessions here at The Stitching Post making your own log cabin quilt. The sessions will follow as below -
Thursday 16th April 10am - 1pm - Learn to make a log cabin block. We will focus on careful cutting using a rotary cutter, and careful piecing. After this session more blocks will need to be made at home before session 2!
Thursday 7th May - 10am - 4pm - we will look at different Log Cabin patterns, lay out your blocks and decide on the pattern you would like to make. The blocks will then be pieced together and a border added. We will then sandwich the quilt ready for quilting. Hand quilting will be taught - but one can decide how best to quilt the log cabin. Lunch will be included on this day.
Thursday 9th July - 10am - 1pm - By the third session the quilt should be quilted and ready for finishing. Here we will look at binding and expertly bind the quilt all with mitred corners!
Fabric for the log cabin can either be purchased from our collection or sourced by you! You will also need a sewing machine.
All classes are held in our stable studio in the beautiful village of Isfield. Please note that the studio is 80 metres approximately from the driveway along a gravel path - so those will mobility difficulties please take note. Due to the studio’s idyllic position the nearest toilet is back up the path in the main house. If you are bringing your own sewing machine to the class we will be on hand to help carry it down to the studio - please just ask for help!
If, for any unforseen reasons the class has to be cancelled firstly a new date will be offered and you may either transfer to the new date or a refund will be issued. Should you need to change your booking please get in touch with Kelly as soon as possible to discuss alternative plans.
